Public Hearing on Scoping Report of New Regional Non-hazardous Waste Landfi­ll for Samegrelo Zemo Svaneti

24/06/2020 – Today, public hearing meetings on scoping report for the construction of New Regional Non-hazardous Waste Landfi­ll for Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti took place in two villages of the Zugdidi municipality, Village Tsatskhvi and Didi Nedzi.

The public hearing was organized by the Ministry of environmental protection and agriculture of Georgia, Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia and program implementors in the frame of the “Integrated Solid Waste Management Programme II”.

The meetings were attended by the Governor of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti, the mayor of Zugdidi, representatives of Municipalities and the local population of the villages: Tsatskhvi and Didi Nedzi. It had an open format, and any member of the public had the right to participate, as well as to submit comments and opinions.

Background information about the project

The Integrated Solid Waste Management (ISWM) Project in Samegrelo Zemo Svaneti Region aims at improving the overall environmental situation in the region by enhancing the solid waste management system including waste collection and transport, closure of existing landfills, and construction of a new Regional Non-Hazardous Waste Landfill in accordance with national and international standards (mainly EU standards).

The project is implemented within the framework of the “Integrated Solid Waste Management Programme II, Kakheti and Samegrelo Zemo Svaneti Regions, Georgia” with the financial support of KfW (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau – German Bank for Reconstruction) and meets both international and national standards. The implementation team of the program are the international consulting company CDM Smith (with local companies: Saunders Group and GEO) and Fichtner (with local companies: PMCG and Paseco).
