SWMCG held two day workshops with stakeholders of the Kutaisi Integrated Solid Waste Management project and local population

9/12/2021 – on December 8-9, in Tskaltubo Municipality, the Solid Waste Management Company of
Georgia (SWMCG) under the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, within the framework of the project “Integrated Solid Waste Management – Kutaisi”, held the two-day workshops with
the project stakeholders and the representatives of the villages near the construction site of a new,
Regional non-hazardous Waste Landfill (for Imereti and Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti regions).
The meeting held on 8th December was attended by: Deputy Minister of Regional Development and infrastructure of Georgia, Mzia Giorgobiani, Director of the Solid Waste Management Company of
Georgia, Giorgi Shukhoshvili, State representative of Imereti, Zviad Shalamberidze, representatives of
Georgian-German cooperation (KfW) and project implementation consultants, as well as,
representatives of project municipalities and NGOs.
On December 9, part of the population living near the construction site of a new, Regional non-
hazardous Waste Landfill was able to obtain additional information on the issue of project design as well
as social and environmental measures, ask questions, express their opinion and receive answers from
the project implementers.
The aim of the workshops was to ensure the involvement of stakeholders in the implementation of the
project “Integrated Solid Waste Management – Kutaisi”. This involvement allows the company to get
additional information about the attitudes of the local population, as well as to hear and take into
account the views of all stakeholders in the project.
The new, regional non-hazardous Waste Landfill for Imereti and Racha-Lechkhumi, Kvemo Svaneti
regions will be arranged in accordance with Georgian legislation and international standards (EU
standards). The new facility and the network of waste transfer stations will completely replace the
existing old landfills, which will be closed step-by-step, in accordance with the standards, providing the
improvement of environmental and sanitary-hygienic norms in the project regions.
We would like to remind you that the project stakeholders and the population were actively involved in
the process of selecting the location for the construction site of a new Regional non-hazardous Waste
Landfills for the Imereti and Racha-Lechkhumi, Kvemo Svaneti regions. The company, at all stages of the
project, in order to involve the local population, with the help of international consultants, has
developed a new approach – “Inform – Invite – Involve”.
The project “Integrated Solid Waste Management – Kutaisi” is currently being implemented under a
German-Georgian bilateral cooperation, with the support of the German Bank of Reconstruction (KfW)
and the EU Neighbourhood Investment Platform (NIF).
