The population of Tskhaltubo Municipality visited a new non-hazardous waste landfill of the Autonomous Republic of Adjara

02/02/2022 – The representatives of villages near the construction site of a new, Regional non-hazardous Waste Landfill (for Imereti and Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti regions) visited a new, non-hazardous waste landfill, constructed by international standards (EU standards) in the Autonomous Republic of Adjara. The visit was organized by the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia (SWMCG). 

Representatives of the SWMCG and the Adjara Solid Waste Management Company provided participants detailed information on the characteristics, specifics and standards of the new non-hazardous waste landfill.

The purpose of the visit was to familiarize the population with the basic standards according to which a new regional non-hazardous waste landfill will be built in Tskaltubo Municipality.

The visit was informative, during which the participants inspected in detail the new, Regional non-hazardous Waste Landfill , were familiarized on the spot with the importance of building and further operating the waste landfill that meets international (EU) standards, and also got acquainted with the environmental protection standards at the facility.

The meeting was conducted in question-answer format, the population could ask all kinds of questions on the commissioning and further operation of a modern facility, as well as get acquainted with the modern infrastructure.

The building of new, regional non-hazardous Waste Landfill for Imereti and Racha-Lechkhumi, Kvemo Svaneti regions, will be provided within the framework of the project “Integrated Solid Waste Management – Kutaisi” , which also be included arrangement of the network of waste transfer stations, equipping municipalities with special waste collection techniques and closing the existing old landfill (“Nikea”) in accordance with the standards, after the commissioning of the new waste landfill. As a result of the project implementation, environmental and sanitary-hygienic norms will be significantly improved in the project regions.

The project “Integrated Solid Waste Management – Kutaisi” is currently being implemented under a German-Georgian bilateral cooperation, with the support of the German Bank of Reconstruction (KfW) and the EU Neighborhood Investment Platform (NIF). The project implementation consultants are CDM Smith Europe and its local partners Saunders Group (Georgia) and GEO (Georgia).
