Most preferable site location for the new regional non-hazardous waste landfill in Imereti region selected with public participation

  • Mukhiani area

On 23 August a meeting of the Siting Advisory Committee (SAC) for selecting the most preferred site location for the new regional non-hazardous waste landfill for Imereti and Racha-Lechkhumi- Kvemo Svaneti regions was held. The Siting Advisory Committee was constituted by members of the Regional Working Group (please find more information here), local farmers, and citizens living in the vicinity of 2 shortlisted sites identified during the Site Selection Report – locations nearby village Adjameti and village Mukhiani.

The main purpose of the committee was to analyse in detail all aspects raised by the local population related to the two potential locations, including considering the possible needs of local communities and then to participate in the final location selection decision-making process.

SAC composed of representatives of SWMCG, local population, local authorities/municipalities, private sector/farmers, and NGOs, with support of project Accompanying Measures Consultant (PEM) conducted the ranking of the two potential sites (Mukhani and Adjameti). The result: Mukhiani site location was selected as the most preferable.

Now the procedure of Environmental Impact Assessment will start and accordingly the first step will be the preparation of the Scoping Report. The MEPA will organise a public hearing during which the citizens have the possibility to comment on this report.

Besides this possibility to be involved during the whole life cycle of the new regional non-hazardous waste facility (preparation, construction, operation, closure, and post-closure maintenance) will also be ensured through the establishment of a Monitoring Committee (MC) (please find more information here).
