A New Landfill for Kvemo Kartli Region

The Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, Ltd. “Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia,” and European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) signed an agreement on “Kvemo Kartli Solid Waste Management” project.

The project implies construction of a new regional sanitary landfill that will serve the following Municipalities: Marneuli, Bolnisi, Dmanisi, Tetritskaro, and Tsalka. The project also considers purchasing all the necessary technical equipment for effectively fulfilling the waste management activities. In addition, a technical assistance component will be implemented, which is aimed at strengthening the institutional development and capacity building possibilities for the Company and the municipalities involved in the project. The project implementation dates are 2015-2018, and afterwards, all the existing municipal landfills in the region will be closed.

Today, the parties also signed loan and grant agreements for the implementation of the project; the loan (7 million Euros) was issued by the EBRD, while the grant (3 million Euros) was issued by the SIDA. The Loan Agreement was signed by Nodar Khaduri, the Minister of Finance of Georgia and Sir Suma Chakrabarti, the President of the EBRD, while the Grant Agreement was signed by Giorgi Shukhoshvili, the director of Ltd. “Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia” and Bruno Balvanera, the Regional Director of the EBRD. Nodar Javakhishvili, the Minister of the Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia attended the event.
