Regional landfills - the future structure of the Georgian Waste Management System

This graphic shows the network of transfer stations for the planned regional landfill near Kutaisi.

Regional landfills

Construction of new regional landfills and systems of connected transfer stations will assure in future a fully integrated solid waste management system in Georgia. Organising municipal household waste flows in this way has been implemented successfully all over the world. The advantages:

  • Construction of a smaller number of big landfills with full protection of the environment reduces the overall investment costs as well as the running operational costs
  • Involvement of a greater number of municipalities using similar systems of waste collection and disposal makes it easier to introduce waste recycling systems on a large scale

The new strategy – replacing 53 municipal landfills with a system of 8 to 10 regional landfills

This is the core mission of the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia: to replace all former municipal landfills from the past over a period of about 10 years with a system of regional landfills and a network of connected transfer stations. A certain number of former municipal landfills will be closed and some will be transformed into transfer stations. At present planning and preparatory works  and feasibility studies are underway for four regional landfills: Imereti, Racha-Lechkhumi and Kvemo Svaneti regions, Kvemo Kartli region, Kakheti region and Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region. For the planned regional landfills in Shida Kartli region and Mtskheta-Mtianeti region it is still under consideration which International Financing Institution (IFI) will finance them, hence no preparatory works and no feasibility are underway yet.
