Municipal landfill renovation works are undergoing in Dusheti. Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, Davit Shavliashvili together with the Head of Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia Ltd, Giorgi Shukhoshvili, Mtskheta Mtianeti Governor, Nugzar Kipiani and other local government officials observed the existing situation on the site today.
Dusheti landfill has been operating since 1940. It was transferred to Ltd Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia for ownership last year. The landfill had been operating for 74 years but the situation there defied all sanitary standards. For years solid waste had been discarded in unorganized manner. Unpleasant odor and harsh conditions on the landfill caused discomfort to local population.
As a result of renovation works conducted by the Ministry, access trail and sewage trenches were arranged. The landfill territory was confined and checkpoint booth was constructed. Fire extinguisher stand and prohibition sign was installed. The entire territory was electrified and machinery ward was arranged as well.
Once the rehabilitated landfill starts operating acceptance and disposal of waste will take place into special cells.
Across country, Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia has renovated 8 landfills within two years. All of them comply with modern standards. In addition, 11 new units will start operating by the end of the year.
