Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia is conducting Samtredia Municipality landfill renovation works. Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia davit Shavliashvili, Deputy Governor of Imereti region Aleksandre Iosebashvili, and other officials observed the site today. The ongoing rehabilitation works at the landfill are carried out by the “Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia,” Ltd.
Rehabilitation of Samtredia landfill is of strategic importance as it serves Samtredia, Vani, Khoni, and Abasha municipalities. Sanitary conditions at the landfill were uncontrollable and grave. The landfill has been operating since 1985. The landfill which was handed to the “Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia,” Ltd., did not comply any sanitary or ecological norms.
In its initial condition the landfill caused environmental problems and put the health of local population in danger. During heavy precipitation, the raised river would flow onto the landfill territory and scattered waste would pollute West Georgia highway.
The rehabilitated landfill will operate in full compliance with modern standards. The acceptance and disposal of waste into special cells at the landfill will be defined in accordance to these norms. Operation of the rehabilitated landfill will improve safety of local population and their immediate environment.
The project is financed by the State budget and costs 559 990 GEL. 15 local inhabitants are employed on the project.
