Today, Mr. Giorgi Koberidze, the Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, Mr. Giorgi Shukhoshvili, the director of “Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia,” and Mr. Shota Murgulia, the Mayor of Kutaisi, together with the governor of Tskaltubo Municipality, local population and non-governmental organizations visited the rehabilitated landfill of Kutaisi and participated in the site clean-up event.
Up to the rehabilitation, the landfill did not meet the ecological and sanitary standards. The site was not fenced that caused dissemination of the waste all over the perimeter, the irrigation canal within the site was polluted. On the basis of the case study, rehabilitation project was designed and the corresponding works have started. Within the framework of the rehabilitation project of the landfill, the following activities were accomplished: terraces have been laid, the disposed waste on the site has been covered with 30 cm soil clay layer, main and temporary roads have been put up, check point and equipment hood were arranged, firefighting shield, landfill renders and no trespassing-signs have been put up, automobile weigh bridges were installed.
Rehabilitated landfill is already in use. At this point soil clay is being reserved on the landfill territory to cover the disposed waste in future. Newly disposed waste will be put in special cells of the landfill that will prevent the population and environment from harmful impacts.
Currently, with support of the German Bank for Reconstruction and Development (KfW), the preparatory works for construction of a new international standard landfill in the region of Imereti are processing. The construction of a new euro-standard landfill is planned or 2014-2017 years. After the implementation of a new landfill, the currently existing landfill in the City of Kutaisi will be closed.
