Mr. Davit Shavliashvili, the Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia visited ongoing works in West Georgia conducted by the Ministry and its subordinated companies.
During the regional trip, the Minister and Mr. George Shukhoshvili, Director of “Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia,” LTD together with the representatives of the local self-government visited the municipal landfills in the municipalities of Kutaisi and Zugdidi.
Within the framework of the rehabilitation project of the landfill in village Didinedzi, the following activities were accomplished: fencing of the landfill territory, construction of a check point, and arrangement of a firefighting shield, landfill render and no trespassing-sign, installment of automobile weigh bridges with the capacity of 60 tons, electrification of the landfill perimeter, arrangement of equipment hood.
In addition to these, soil clay has been reserved on the landfill territory to cover the disposed waste. Disposed waste and the isolation layer will be permanently sealed by means of bulldozers.
As a result of arrangement of a contemporary standard landfill in Zugdidi Municipality, the household waste in the region will be disposed safely in terms of health and environmental security. Operation of the landfill will prevent the harmful impacts of the waste upon environment and nearby population.
Moreover, Mr. Davit Shavliashvili, the Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, together with Mr. Zaza Mefarishvili, the State Governor of Imereti Region and Mr. Shota Murgulia, the Mayor of the City of Kutaisi, visited ongoing rehabilitation works of Imereti Regional Landfill. The landfill is located on Kutaisi-Geguti highway, near to Nikea Street and occupies 150962 m² square.
To be mentioned, with support of the German Bank for Reconstruction and Development (KfW), the preparatory works for construction of a new international standard landfill in the region of Imereti are processing. Current activity implies selection of consultants/experts who will develop the landfill project and design. The construction of a new euro-standard landfill is planned or 2014-2017 years. After the implementation of a new landfill, the currently existing landfill in the City of Kutaisi will be closed.
