The closure of Zestafoni Municipal landfill is in progress. Giorgi Shukhoshvili, the Director of Ltd. “Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia” along with Nikoloz Kraveishvili and Vakhtang Ghambashidze; the Deputy Heads of Zestafoni Municipality, together with the local self-government representatives, visited the Municipal landfill to check the progression of the closure woks.
Ltd. “Solid Waste Management Company” is taking into account the reductions of existing landfills around the country. Therefore, on the basis of the preliminary research a step by step plan was developed for the closure of landfills. Within the plan the company has suspended the operation of landfills and started their gradual closure accordingly to the standards.
Within the closure plan, Zestafoni Municipal landfill, active since 2007, will be shut down. In terms of the closure works, the polygon surface formation will be reconstructed, waste will be graded and a surface with insulating loam soil will be installed. From the side of river Mkvirala, coastal protection works will be arranged to eliminate the risk of river pollution In case of floods.
The total area of the landfill comprises of 32 190.00 m². Zestafoni, Municipal landfill was transferred to the possession of Ltd. “Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia” in 2013. The closure project cost amounted to 799 990 Georgian Lari.
