LTD “the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia” (SWMCG) under the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia informed the population of Tskaltubo villages about the activities and findings of the scoping report for the construction of New, Regional Non-hazardous Waste Landfill, which was prepared by local and international experts.
The meeting was attended by the Deputy-Ministers of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, Mzia Giorgobiani and Koba Gabunia, the Governor of Imereti, Zviad Shalamberidze, the Mayor of Tskaltubo Municipality, Genadi Balanchivadze and the representatives of the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia (SWMCG).
In general, the main purpose of the meetings with the local population is to inform the population at each stage of the project, to ensure their involvement and take into account the opinions of the population in the scoping report.
During the meeting, the population was given the opportunity to get acquainted in detail with the important topics related to the project, such as:
- The activities and findings, which were prepared within working process on scoping report;
- Issues related to the design, construction and commissioning of a new non-hazardous waste landfill;
- Mechanisms for stakeholders and population involvement;
- Opportunities for the population to participate in the formation of a Monitoring Commission;
- Information about community support activities.
During the project, members of the Monitoring Committee will control the design, construction, commissioning and operating processes of the new regional landfill.
The scoping report will be submitted to the Ministry of environmental protection and agriculture of Georgia, which will hold public hearings on the scoping report with the local population.
The project “Integrated Solid Waste Management – Kutaisi” is currently being implemented under German-Georgian bilateral cooperation, with the financial support of the German Bank of Reconstruction (KfW), the EU Neighborhood Investment Platform (NIF) and the Government of Georgia.
The aim of the project is to design and build a new, regional non-hazardous waste landfill, that will comply with Georgian and international (EU) standards and serve the population of Imereti and Racha-Lechkhumi-Kvemo Svaneti regions. The project also includes the construction of six waste transfer stations, equipping municipalities with special waste collection techniques and closing the existing old landfill (“Nikea”) in accordance with the standards, after the commissioning of the new waste landfill.
The project implementation consultants are CDM Smith Europe and its local partners Saunders Group (Georgia) and GEO (Georgia).
