17/02/2022 – The Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia (SWMCG) under the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia held the meeting with representatives of the population living near the sites selected as a result of preliminary studies for the construction of a new regional non-hazardous waste landfill in Kakheti. The meeting was part of a new approach to stakeholder engagement called “Inform – Invite – Engage”, which was formed with the help of international and local experts.
The main purpose of this kind of meeting is to inform the local population from the very beginning of the project and ensure their participation. Thus, the population will be able to express their opinions, needs, and recommendations at each stage, which will be taken into account in the process of project implementation.
During the presentation, there was valuable participation from the population; especially the young representatives of the villages of Gurjaani municipality raised many interesting questions and ideas. The participants also expressed their readiness for further cooperation.
The meeting was attended by Giorgi Shukhoshvili, director of the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia, company employees and the representatives of the accompanying measures consulting consortium of the project.
The meeting was held within the framework of “integrated Solid Waste Management Programme II – Kakheti and Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti Regions” and is implemented with the financial support of the German Bank for reconstruction (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau – KfW).
The project for Kakheti includes the construction of a new, non-hazardous regional waste landfill, the development of a network of waste transfer stations, the construction of a compost plant, as well as the closure of existing (old) landfills and equipping municipalities with special equipment for waste collection.
