Today, Giorgi Shukhoshvili, the director of Ltd. “Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia” attended the national meeting of the NGO Consortium. The Consortium national meeting analyzed the current situation in the country in regard with the solid waste management.
The members of the Consortium are: “Orkhisi” – Environment Research Union of Georgia, Green Movement of Georgia/Friends of the Earth-Georgia, and “Eco Vision” – Sustainable Development Union.
The Consortium is carrying out a project “Cleaning Georgia – public awareness raising and involvement of the Georgian population in the process of the solid waste management improvement.” The project is implemented with financial support of the Government of Sweden and with technical assistance of the Ministry of Environment and National Resources Protection of Georgia, and Ltd. “Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia.”
Within the framework of the project, the NGO Green Movement of Georgia/Friends of the Earth-Georgia collected data about existing unofficial dumpsites, cleaning campaign were conducted across the country, informational meetings/seminars about the existing problems and worldwide achievements in the field of solid waste management were held for the Georgian population as well as for the representatives of the governmental and non-governmental institutions, students and stakeholders in Georgia.
The unofficial dumpsites’ influence on the nearby ecosystem was evaluated at today’s summarizing meeting, as well as further recommendations were established for improvement of the existing situation.
Martina Quick – the Ambassador of Sweden to Georgia and Armenia, Eva Smedberg – the Head of the SIDA, Gigla Agulashvili – the Minister of Environment and National Resources Protection of Georgia, and Giorgi Shukhoshvili – the Director of the Ltd. “Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia,” together with the representatives of the Consortium attended the meeting today.
