The construction of new regional nonhazardous waste landfill landfill has begun in the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region of Georgia

27/05/24 – The “Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia” (SWMCG) under the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia has signed an agreement on the construction of a new Euro-standardized regional non-hazardous waste landfill and the closure of an existing landfill in Zugdidi municipality, for Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region.

The program is implemented within Georgia-Germany Financial Cooperation, through the financial support of the German Bank for Reconstruction and Development (KfW). The “Integrated Solid Waste Management Programme II” (ISWM II), for the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region included the closure of an existing landfill in Zugdidi municipality and the construction of a new regional non-hazardous waste landfill.

The new waste landfill will serve the municipalities of the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region and provide safe waste placement using modern special equipment in accordance with Georgian legislation and European standards. Groundwater, air, and soil will be protected from harmful effects using modern systems installed on the waste landfill (including high-tech landfill systems, leachate collection systems, and gas collection and utilization systems).

The exploitation of the new waste landfill is planned to begin in 2025, leading to this, modern waste management systems will be integrated in the region. This will improve waste management services for more residents and enhance the region’s environmental and living conditions.

The construction works will be carried out by the Turkish company ATLAS İNŞAAT SANAYİ VE TİCARET LİMİTED ŞİRKETİ  revealed through an international tender.

The signing ceremony was attended by the Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, Mzia Giorgobiani, the Director of Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia, Giorgi Shukhoshvili, and representatives of implementing consultants, the international consulting company.

LTD “The Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia ” (SWMCG)  is implementing a similar project in Kvemo Kartli region, where construction of the new modern Euro-standardized regional non-hazardous waste landfill has already begun, with plans for exploitation in 2025.
