08/11/2024 – A working meeting was held as part of the feasibility study on solid waste in Central Georgia.
The meeting was attended by representatives of the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, Ltd Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD), the German Credit Bank (KfW), the international consultancy company COWI, and its local partner RECC – Caucasus.
During the meeting, the consulting company conducting the study presented a report reviewing solid waste management practices in Georgia. The report assessed the current situation in Central Georgia, specifically in Shida Kartli, Mtskheta-Mtianeti, and Samtskhe-Javakheti regions. Additionally, the attendees were introduced to the waste management system implementation plan and the project’s execution strategy.
The study focuses on implementing an integrated waste management system for Shida Kartli, Mtskheta-Mtianeti, and Samtskhe-Javakheti regions. It includes the establishment of a network consisting of two regional non-hazardous landfills and six waste transfer stations. Moreover, international consultants are assessing the future feasibility of setting up two mechanical-biological treatment plants.
As a result, a modern waste management system will be introduced in Central Georgia, improving environmental and living conditions in all three regions. Additionally, waste collection services will become more accessible to local residents.
