Today, the Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, Elguja Khokrishvili, the Director of the Solid Waste Management Company, George Shukhoshvili, Governor of Imereti region Zaza Meparishvili, deputy governor, Alexander Iosebashvili, Acting Mayor, Nodar Mikiashvili and Vice – Mayor Kote Kavtaradze observed the final stage of the works for regulation of the landfill in Kutaisi. The landfill was opened in 1956. Polygon is located in Kutaisi, on Geguti highway, near Nikea Street, on the area of 150962.28 sq. / m. According to the preliminary researches, the landfill did not meet the ecological and sanitary standards. The situation was aggravated by the fact that the dump was not fenced, that caused to dispersed the waste around the perimeter. Domestic cattle were moving on the landfill freely and were eating the waste. The irrigation channel, which was located within the area of the dump, was contaminated, and the waste was flowing into the river Rioni.
On the basis of the research of the territory, the project of the accomplishment of the landfill has been developed and construction – installation works has been begun. Within the frameworks of the rehabilitation terraces have been made, certain waste was covered by 30 cm loamy soil. Major and a temporary vehicle road have been arranged, a guarding-shack was housed. Also fire-stand, dump rendering and prohibiting sign were installed. In addition a Libra for heavy equipment was installed; Sewage system was arranged around landfill. In order to cover waste, the dumpsite is provided by loam soil. Riverbank enforcement works to River Rioni are about to finish. After the opening of the dump, the waste will be placed in special segments in order to minimize negative impact on the environment and ensure safety of local inhabitants.
The preparation works of construction project of a new Imereti Regional Landfill are under way with the support of KfW. The selection process of the experts who will work on the landfill project design is ongoing at present. The construction of new landfill is planned to be carried out within 2014-2017 while the present dumpsite will be closed according to European standards.
