Information meeting was held in Kvemo Kartli on the construction of a New Regional Non-hazardous Waste Landfill

30/07/2020 – In the framework of the Kvemo Kartli Waste Management project, an information meeting was held on the construction of a new, non-hazardous regional waste disposal facility in line with European standards. The meeting was held at the administration Kvemo Kartli state representative. Giorgi Shukhoshvili, Director of the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia, presented the project to the local population of the villages  Shavsakdri and Tsintskaro, representatives of local authorities and non-governmental organizations.

The meeting was attended by State Representative in Kvemo Kartli Shota Rekhviashvili and Tetritskaro Municipality Mayor Giorgi Koridze.

The main purpose of the event was to provide information to the population about the importance of the new regional Landfill and to receive feedback.

Within the framework of the project, it is planned to arrange a new, regional, non-hazardous waste disposal facility for 5 municipalities in the region (Tetritskaro, Marneuli, Tsalka, Bolnisi,  Dmanisi). The new facility will serve more than 200 000 residents. The project also envisages equipping municipalities with waste collection facilities, which will make the cleaning system more efficient. The building of a new landfill will create additional jobs for the local population. Existing landfills in the region will be gradually closed, which will significantly improve the environment and living conditions for the local population.

The project is funded by the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) and the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency (SIDA). The project is being consulted by International Consulting Company HPC AG and its local partner – Policy and Management Consulting Group – PMCG.
