22/03/2022 – The Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia (SWMCG) under the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia will start the construction of a new regional non-hazardous waste landfill in Zugdidi in the second half of this year.

Currently, with the financial support of the German Bank for Reconstruction (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau – KfW), the project “Integrated Solid Waste Management Programme II – Kakheti and Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti Regions” is being implemented. The project includes the construction of a new regional non-hazardous waste landfill in Zugdidi.

The old landfill in Zugdidi and the construction site of a new regional non-hazardous waste landfill were visited by Mzia Giorgobiani, Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia Lydia Klismann, Representative of the Embassy of the Federal Republic of Germany in Zugdidi, and Birgit Holderied-Kreß, Director of the Office of the German Reconstruction Credit Bank (KfW) in Georgia, Ekaterina Guntsadze, Deputy Minister of Finance of Georgia and Giorgi Guguchia, Governor of Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti.

Giorgi Shukhoshvili, Director of the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia, presented to the guests the design concept for the construction of the planned new waste landfill. In addition, the project for Zugdidi includes the development of a network of waste transfer stations and equipping municipalities with special equipment for waste collection.

After the construction of the new waste landfill, all existing (old) landfills in the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region will be gradually closed by the standards. The project will contribute to a significant improvement in sanitary-hygienic norms, as well as natural and social environmental conditions in the region, through an approach to the implementation of a modern waste management system.

The implementation team of the program is the international consulting company, CDM Smith, with local companies: Saunders Group(Georgia) and GEO(Georgia).
