After the construction of a new regional non-hazardous waste landfill, the old existing landfills will be closed

The Deputy Minister of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia, Mzia Giorgobiani visited the old landfill and the construction site of a new regional non-hazardous waste landfill in Zugdidi. Giorgi Shukhoshvili, Director of the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia, presented to the Deputy Minister the project concept for the planned construction of a new waste landfill.

The construction of a new regional non-hazardous waste landfill in Zugdidi is scheduled for the second half of this year as part of “integrated Solid Waste Management Programme II – Kakheti and Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti Regions”. Additionally, the project for Zugdidi includes the development of a network of waste transfer stations and equipping municipalities with special equipment for waste collection. After the construction of the new waste landfill, all existing (old) landfills in the Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti region will be closed gradually, according to the standards.

The project will contribute to a significant improvement in sanitary-hygienic norms, as well as natural and social environmental conditions in the region, through an approach to the implementation of a modern waste management system.

The project is currently being implemented with the financial support of the German Bank for reconstruction (Kreditanstalt für Wiederaufbau – KfW). The implementation team of the program is the international consulting company, CDM Smith, with local companies: Saunders Group(Georgia) and GEO(Georgia).
