11/03/2022 – In the municipality of Tskaltubo, at the initiative of the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia (SWMCG), the first meeting of the Monitoring Committee (MC) was held within the framework of the project “Integrated Solid Waste Management – Kutaisi”.

The main purpose of the Commission is to monitor and control the activities of the solid waste management company of Georgia during the whole life cycle of the new regional non-hazardous waste facility. The Commission was set up on the basis of the Sitting Advisory Committee (SAC), with the participation of representatives of the settlements adjoining the final location.

The Monitoring Committee will support the building of trust and the establishment of sustainable long-term cooperation between stakeholders, the public and the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia at all stages of the project (preparation, construction, operation, closure, and post-closure maintenance).

The commission includes representatives of the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia, the state representative administration of Imereti, City Hall of Tskaltubo, settlements near the construction site of a new regional non-hazardous waste facility, the scientific sector and non-governmental organizations.

The first meeting of the commission was introductory. The members were thoroughly acquainted with the general goals, competencies and tasks of the Monitoring Committee. Furthermore, the committee members expressed their views and recommendations on the functioning of the monitoring process. The company familiarized the members with the concept of the Monitoring Committee and the members were able to submit their opinions, which will be taken into account in the process of developing the regulation on the Monitoring Committee. The company will present these revised regulations at the next committee meeting and the committee will approve them.

The project “Integrated Solid Waste Management – Kutaisi” is currently being implemented under German-Georgian bilateral cooperation, with the financial support of the German Bank of Reconstruction (KfW), the EU Neighborhood Investment Platform (NIF) and the Government of Georgia.

The construction of a new regional non-hazardous waste landfill for the Imereti and Racha-Lechkhumi-Kvemo Svaneti regions and the organization of a system of waste transfer stations (that will completely replace the existing landfills, which are being gradually closed in accordance with the standards) are planned as part of the project. The project also includes equipping municipalities with special waste collection techniques needed for waste collection and treatment.
