17/02/2022 – Representatives of the population living near the sites selected as a result of preliminary studies for the construction of a new regional non-hazardous waste landfill in Kakheti visited the new non-hazardous waste landfill, constructed by international standards (EU standards) in the Autonomous Republic of Adjara; The Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia(SWMCG) under the Ministry of Regional Development and Infrastructure of Georgia was the organizer of the visit.
The visit was held within the framework of “integrated Solid Waste Management Programme II – Kakheti and Samegrelo-Zemo Svaneti Regions”, the programme includes:
- Construction of new non-hazardous regional waste landfills for the regions of Kakheti and Samegrelo-Zemo-Svaneti;
- Development of the network of waste transfer stations and a compost plant in Kakheti region;
- Closure of existing (old) landfills;
- Equipping municipalities with special equipment for waste collection.
Director of the Adjara Solid Waste Management Company, Nodar Kontselidze and Director of the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgian, Giorgi Shukhoshvili, introduced the participants to the basic principles of construction and further operation of a waste landfill. The employees of the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia and the representatives of the accompanying measures consulting consortium of the project also attended the event.
The meeting was held in a question-answer (Q&A) format; the population could ask all kinds of questions about the operation of the new waste landfill and become acquainted with the modern infrastructure. Representatives of the Solid Waste Management Company of Georgia and Adjara Solid Waste Management Company provided participants with detailed information on the characteristics, specifics, and standards of the new, non-hazardous waste landfill.
